Red Dead Redemption 2 begins after the Blackwater Massacre, a disastrous ferry heist where Dutch killed an innocent woman and the gang lost members, forcing them to flee through the snowy mountains of Colter. Arthur Morgan, Dutch’s most trusted lieutenant, helps the gang rob and fight their way across the American frontier from New Hanover to Saint Denis, desperately searching for enough money for everyone to retire from the outlaw life. As Dutch’s plans grow more reckless—playing rival families against each other in Rhodes, orchestrating a doomed bank heist in Saint Denis, and inciting war between Native Americans and the U.S. Army—Arthur contracts tuberculosis and begins questioning Dutch’s increasingly violent and erratic leadership. When Arthur discovers that Micah Bell is a Pinkerton mole and Dutch refuses to rescue John Marston’s kidnapped girlfriend Abigail, Arthur breaks with Dutch and sacrifices himself to ensure John and his family can escape and build a new life.
